As many of you know, I fell and hurt my foot a couple of weeks ago. Now I’m stuck in a walking boot and it hinders everything I want to do. Normal tasks take twice as long and going up or down the stairs is a process that only occurs once a day. It’s easy to be mad, upset or depressed because of this situation, but I have tried really hard to find the silver lining.
When people comment on the boot and say, “Oh that stinks! It must be hard to get around,” I reply, “It is tedious, but I’m grateful to be up and moving.” And then I repeat that to myself over and over until I start to believe it.
Yes, it is a total pain in the butt to have to take tiny, baby steps everywhere and lug around the extra five pounds. But I keep thinking that it could have been worse.
I didn’t need surgery, I didn’t hit my head when I fell and I got in with a great orthopedic doctor pretty quickly. Other people have small accidents like that and it forever alters the trajectory of their lives.
So am I still a little upset and depressed?
Yes, but it is overshadowed by the gratitude.
Do you try to find the silver lining?
How many times have you had a small mishap and let it ruin what was an otherwise good day?
You know what I mean; your kid threw a tantrum before school or there was a traffic jam on the way to work. Do you let it affect the rest of your day or do you accept it, try to see the good and move on?
Maybe your kid was having a tantrum because he wanted to spend five more minutes with you. Doesn’t it feel good to know he loves you so much?
Maybe the traffic jam was put there by the universe to save you from getting in a car wreck two miles down the road. Or to get you to work at the perfect time to snag a prime parking spot.
When you obsess on the bad, that is all you will see. The rest of your day will be clouded. But when you try to find the silver lining, you will start to see the good all around you.
I know, it doesn’t come naturally to most people and some days, I have to dig deep to try and find the good in the situation, but I promise you, it is there. If you look hard enough, you can find the silver lining in every situation.
The universe put you in that position for a reason. Maybe it was to save you from something or teach you a lesson.
So listen up. Open your ears and your eyes. Take a deep breath and take it all in. Release the negative and focus on the positive.
Now go have an epic day!
